"Im sorry but black people cant be elves because black people arent beautiful or good"
Please tell me this anon is fucking joking.
Poc can’t be pure apparently
This is something a friend of mine actually said to my face while I was talking about diversity in books the other day. I really don’t understand how people could think it’s strange for a fictional mythical creature to have darker skin. If it’s about staying close to the original, then why do they think it’s fine for vampires to walk out in the sun? Why do they use Tolkien as a source instead of the original elves? And if it’s about beauty and purity… how can they not see how racist they are? How blinded can they be by their own hateful delusions?
Because purity and innocence is coded as whiteness.
Black and dark skinned beings code fear, anger, depravity and hatred in juxtoposition to whiteness.
Fuck that. Give me elves dark as obsidian and midnight. Give me elves with skin as soft and smooth as sable. Give me elves that anything other than the overdone color of mayo and alabaster.
When you say your a feminist…I hope you really know what that means. It means standing up for women of color.
Standing by black women who must deal with being referred to as welfare queens or ratchet.
Being a feminist is standing beside immigrant women who deal with wage theft, unsafe working conditions, and being referred to as leaving anchor babies in America.
It means standing beside Native American women who face domestic violence and rape at unprecedented rates.
It means standing beside Muslim women who choose to live out their faith and face Islamaphobia, sexism and ignorance constantly.
It means standing beside Asian women who have been misrepresented in the media to be thought of as only submissive and quiet.
Please recognize that feminism impacts the lives of every single one of these groups…but we are all women
